I’ve seen many races at the famed oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. So, for a girl with a love of cars and a penchant for speed, imagine my eagerness to drive three consecutive laps in an Indy Car. This opportunity came after I’d been a passenger in an Indy Car two-seater. I loved the feeling of being in the car so much that when my ride was complete, the crew had to ask me to get out of the car more than once! It was at that point I asked, “who do I need to contact to drive the car by myself?” Three months later, after a short safety course, the time had come. My lead car was piloted by Arie Luyendyk Jr. and while his car was at full strength, I was hindered by the dreaded governor. Arie Jr. provided a line for me and expected to be pushed only 100mph. He had no idea who was trailing him, though. I had the pedal buried and the car at max speed, 130mph. After holding steady for three laps, we pitted and Arie Jr. jumped out of the car to run back to slap me on the helmet, saying: “that was awesome, you really drove that car!” The look on his face was priceless as I emerged from the car and all the hair cascaded out of the helmet. If only they made fire safe driving heels…
